Cinque Terre to Antibes

By Justin Cruz

July 2nd, 2012

Transition day! It was time again to move on to the next town, this time we were going from Cinque Terre to Antibes. From the beginning we were told that this was going to be one of the longest travel days we were going to experience on our trip. It was. Total time between departure and arrival was eight hours, from 10:00 am to about 6:15 pm, almost the same time it took us to fly from San Francisco to Munich.

To start, we had breakfast at the buffet in the main building of the hotel we were staying in, then went to the Rio Maggiore train station. From there, it was a ten minute ride to La Spezia. Short. Then, about an hour from La Spezia to Genova. Longer. In our fourty minute break in Genova we had lunch on the go at a pizzeria just outside the station. Then another two hours from Genova to the Italian border, followed by another two from there to Antibes.

As on any long trip, everybody slept a lot. Otherwise, nothing extraordinary happened, although we did end up on the wrong train on our way from Italy to France. It turned out we were at the wrong station, but we ended up taking the exact same path, only we were a few minutes behind our original train.

In Antibes, there was a fifteen minute waiting period as we tried to get the payphones to work. They didn't. Instead of calling the owner of our apartment and trying to catch a cab (there were none), we walked across town hoping she would be there. Upon arriving in our new neighborhood, we found lots of resturaunts. We later found that the smell of their deliciousness carried all the way through our open window on the second floor, which was a nice surprise.

When we arrived at our apartment the landlord wasn't around, it was another five minutes before Dad found someone willing to lend him their phone. The key was hidden in a potted plant in the front. The apartment itself is small, but very nice. Three beds, two bedrooms, a little kitchen, and one bathroom. The best part though, is the beach, which is only a few blocks away.
